    What We're About

    What is Addiction?

Let's start with the basics. What is addiction?

    Wikipedia defines addiction like this:

“Addiction is a neuropsychological disorder characterized by a persistent and intense urge to use a drug or engage in a behavior that produces natural reward, despite substantial harm and other negative consequences. Repetitive drug use often alters brain function in ways that perpetuate craving and weakens (but does not completely negate) self-control.”

From observing family members and friends with substance addictions and working to manage my own addictive behaviors, I can attest to the idea of intense urges. Most of the time, it feels like following the urge is the only way to go, the only logical direction that we can take.

There are two ways to go about dealing with addiction: intellectually and personally. I believe it's best to combine them.

First and most importantly, we have to take our own situation seriously. If we have an addiction problem, it's best we address that head on. There's nothing wrong with studying the subject of addiction, but if we study and never come to grips with our own addictive impulses and behaviors, we'll stay in our heads and avoid the real issue.

We're further building out this website to give you a vast array of intellectual resources in the field of addiction. The outline below will give you a sense of what you'll be able to learn.

But it all drives toward what's most important: an opportunity to engage with me and my team to unpack whatever it is that is gripping you, apparently against your will.
